Guanacos of Torres Del Paine

Guanacos of Torres Del Paine loading

A trio of guanacos grazes below the peaks or Torres Del Paine National Park. This species is the wild parent species of the domesticated Llama. These along with alpacas, vicuñas and camels are all part of the Camelid family. People tend to associate camel with Mongollia or the Middle East. But the fossil record indicates they actually first evolved in North America, traveling west through Asia across the Bering land bridge before going extinct in the Americas. This entire family of animals is extinct now in North America, and camels are no longer native within the New World, but the evolution and domestication of these species has been fundamental in shaping of history of South America, particularly of the Inca.
