Labná Arch

This richly decorated gateway at Labná was almost certainly more than a doorway. Ornamented on both faces and standing free of any surrounding wall, the arch is thought to have marked a formal passage between two groups of buildings, possibly linked to the site's sacbe, a raised stone causeway. Whatever its exact purpose, and that remains a matter of interpretation, it reads as a ceremonial threshold rather than a simple entrance. Its pointed corbel vault, framed by Puuc step-fret and latticework in cut limestone, still invites the visitor up its low steps and through to the other side.
