Amaru Muru Sandstone Ridge

Amaru Muru Sandstone Ridge loading

No one really know for sure who carved the face of this sandstone wall. According to local legend, it was created by the Lupaca people, speakers of the Aymara language who lived on the southern shore of Lake Titicaca. The Aymara are said to have conquered this region following the collapse of the Tiwanaku civilization around 1000 AD. The Lupaca were later conquered by the Inca around 1450 AD.
